The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, will leave for Tehran this weekend for talks that could ease a stalemate between Iran and the West, but could also jeopardize the escalation and damage of negotiations on the resumption of the nuclear deal with Iran. The news was announced on Saturday by three diplomats who said that Mr. Grossi’s trip before next week’s meeting of the board of governors of this agency, which consists of 35 seats, was confirmed.
Two of the diplomats said Mr Grossi was expected to arrive in Tehran early Sunday morning. He is expected to meet with the new head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammad Eslami.
The International Atomic Energy Agency informed member states this week that no progress had been made on two key issues: explaining the traces of uranium found in some old, undeclared plants and providing urgent access to some monitoring equipment, so that the agency continue to monitor parts of Iran’s nuclear program, as provided for in the 2015 agreement.
Indirect talks between the United States and Iran, aimed at returning to the terms of the nuclear deal, have been suspended since June. Washington and its European allies have called on President Ebrahim Raisi, who took office in August, to resume talks.
Under the 2015 agreement between Iran and the major powers, Tehran agreed to restrictions on nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. In 2018, former President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the deal, reinstating painful economic sanctions on Iran. Since 2019, Tehran has responded by violating many of the points that form the core of the agreement, such as enriching uranium to a level that can be used to produce a nuclear weapon./VOA
