The cyclone could be caused by Hurricane Nicholas which is heading to the Texas coast.
The storm is located 60 kilometers from the mouth of the Rio Grande, the river that marks the border between Mexico and Texas. During the day, however, it is expected to touch the ground.
Because Nikola is accompanied by winds of up to 95 kilometers per hour, there is a risk of flooding, “especially in highly urbanized metropolitan areas,” warn US meteorologists.
For his part, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott urged residents to heed warnings from local authorities.
“We expect heavy rain tonight and tomorrow. I urge you not to take to the streets,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.
