The Director-General of the World Health Organization once again sounded the alarm regarding the lack of vaccines against coronavirus in low-income countries.
“Globally, 5.5 billion doses of vaccine have been administered. “But 80% of them are administered in high- and middle-income countries,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
According to him, despite everyone talking about the importance of vaccines, few decisions have been made to address the problem of dose shortages in low-income countries.
“High-income countries have promised to donate more than a billion doses, but less than 15% of these doses have been donated. Manufacturers have promised to prioritize the COVAX program to help low-income countries. We no longer want promises. We only want vaccines “, said Mr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Last month, the United States donated more than 110 million doses to more than 60 countries around the world. The WHO, which opposes the use of the third dose of coronavirus vaccine because many countries still have vaccine shortages, says the use of the booster dose should be postponed beyond September.
But Israel became the first country to offer the third dose to residents over 60 years old. Health authorities in Israel then expanded the program to include first-line workers and the age limit for the third dose was reduced to 40 years.
“I am very happy that the third dose was allowed for the age of 40 and above. “I was waiting,” said a Jerusalem resident.
Earlier this month, France also offered a third dose of the vaccine to people over 65 as well as those with health problems.
“Over time, there is a decline in antibodies to people who were vaccinated six months ago. “The third dose increases the level of antibodies for those at risk, especially people with weakened immune systems and the elderly,” said Sisley Tatoguen, a medical student.
Meanwhile, Canada and Germany have announced that they will launch similar vaccination programs, to give the third dose of the vaccine.FLY
