A third dose of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine and its variants is being administered in Japan.
The Kyodo news agency, citing government sources, reported that the COVID-19 Advisory Board is reviewing the plan for the third dose of the vaccine by the end of the year.
The Board has taken into account the fact that six months after the second dose, the antibodies produced against COVID-19 have decreased and the vaccine has lost its effectiveness against various variants, including Delta.
With calls from vaccine manufacturers regarding the necessity of the third dose, the board will implement the planning for injecting this dose into volunteers by the end of the year.
On the other hand, it is said that the board will also consider the possibility of mixing doses of domestically administered Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines.
So far, according to officials, half of Japan’s population of 126 million has been vaccinated in two doses since the country launched its COVID-19 vaccination campaign in February this year.AA
