The Smart Voting app devised by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been removed from Apple and Google stores on the day Russians are voting in parliamentary elections.
Russian authorities had threatened to fine the two companies if they refused to remove the app, which told users who could drop the ruling party’s candidates.
Parliamentary and local elections began today and will last three days.
Although a total of 14 parties are voting, many top candidates like anti-Putin are not allowed to run, including anyone linked to Navalny’s opposition movement. Some prominent Kremlin opponents have been forced to flee Russia.
