American real estate heir Robert Durst, subject of the HBO crime documentary The Jinx, has been convicted of killing his best fugitive, Susan Berman.
Durst pleaded guilty to killing Ms. Berman in 2000 to stop him from talking to police about his wife’s disappearance.
Then at age 55, she was found shot in the head at her home in Beverly Hills. In the final episode of The Jinx, Durst is heard muttering to himself, “What the hell did I do? “It killed them all, of course.”
Hours before the broadcast of the final episode, authorities arrested Durst in New Orleans for the murder of Ms. Berman. The trial panel was allowed to see the documented during the trial.
Prosecutors called Durst, 78, a “narcissistic psychopath.” Now it looks like he will die in prison. Susan Berman was a Giallo crime writer, and had acted as Durst spokeswoman when he became suspected of missing his wife.
At an earlier hearing, Durst’s attorney, Dick DeGuerin, objected to the jury also showing clips from All the Good Things, a 2010 film about his marriage to Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst.
The film was directed by The Jinx director Andrew Jarecki and depicts the mogul’s life, portraying him as a killer. Durst’s wife, Kathleen McCormack, a medical student, disappeared in 1982 and is presumed dead.
Shortly after Friday’s ruling, her family issued a statement urging prosecutors in New York’s Westchester County to prosecute Durst.
“The justice system in Los Angeles has finally served the Berman family. “Now is the time for Westchester to do the same for the McCormack family,” they said.
Prosecutors argue that Durst actually killed three people – the third was an elderly neighbor, Morris Black, who revealed Durst’s identity in 2001 while he was hiding in Texas.
Durst was acquitted of charges of killing Mr Black, successfully arguing that he had killed him on the basis of self-defense before dismembering the body.
Durst is a foreign member in one of New York City’s richest and most powerful real estate dynasties. His brother Douglas Durst, who testified in court, told the court: “He would like to kill me.” Durst will be sentenced on October 18.
