A volcano erupted yesterday on the Spanish island of La Palmas, accompanied by heavy damage in El Paso, south of the island, forcing at least 5,000 people to flee the area as well as causing damage to hundreds of homes.
“The Civil Guard has evacuated at least 5,000 people affected by the blast,” El Pais reported.
“Among the people evacuated so far from the surrounding areas are another 500 tourists”, reported the TV station “Canaris7”.
Firefighters were battling the blaze caused by the blast as a large cloud of ash was visible on the island.
La Palma Island has 83,000 inhabitants.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez canceled a planned trip to the US and arrived in La Palma last night.
