The company Pfizer and BioNtech have announced today that the vaccine produced by them, is safe and effective even for children aged 5-11 years.
The companies plan to submit the relevant information to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and other regulators as soon as possible in order to evaluate and approve the use of the vaccine in children of this age.
The statement issued by the two companies does not include detailed data from the test. The findings have not yet been evaluated by third parties nor have they been published in a scientific journal.
According to experts, however, the new results coincide with those observed in older children and adults.
“We are pleased to extend the protection that the vaccine provides to the younger population, subject to regulatory authorization, especially when monitoring the prevalence of the Delta variant and the current threat to children,” said Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer.
The announcement comes amid new data created by the Delta mutation: Today about one in five new cases are in young people.
Children have a much lower risk than adults, even when exposed to the Delta variant. However, a small number of infected children become seriously ill, while others may have symptoms lasting for months.
