The US special envoy to Haiti has resigned in protest of the expulsion of immigrants from Haiti.
“The US decision to send immigrants to a country where armed gangs controlled daily life was inhumane,” said Daniel Foote in his resignation letter.
Last weekend, the United States began deporting immigrants from a Texas border town that has seen an influx, with about 13,000 gathered under a bridge. They waited in a makeshift camp at temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius. Local officials have struggled to provide them with adequate food and sanitation.
Most of those in the camp are Haitian, but there are also Cubans, Peruvians, Venezuelans and Nicaraguanians present.
