Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) to make one last effort in the run-up to Sunday’s federal election.
“In less than 50 hours, the voting will open. But there are many people who always decide what to vote for at the last minute. Therefore, we are all called again to use these hours together to win the elections, “she said at the last official joint pre-election meeting of the CDU and CSU in Munich.
Merkel recalled German reunification, linking it to elections. “Even then it was clear that it did not matter who ruled,” she said.
The later chancellor of the Social Democratic Party SPD, Gerhard Schroeder, once said of the euro that it was a premature birth. But then-Finance Minister Theo Weigel and Chancellor Helmut Kohl were in favor of the euro. “It was right with all the problems we had to keep Europe united,” said Chancellor Merkel.
Two days before the federal election, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) retains its leadership. According to a poll by the Allensbach Institute on behalf of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the SPD loses a point at 26%, while the CDU / CSU gains 0.5% and reaches 25%.
The Greens also gained half a point at 16%, followed by the Liberal Party (FDP) with 10.5% (+0.5), the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 10% (-1) and the Left with 5% (-1).
