A few days before the parliamentary elections in Germany, the European Commission has accused Russia of trying to interfere in the European democratic process.
In a statement to the media, the EC said that EU member states have detected malicious cyber activities and linked them to the Russian state.
According to the communiqué, such activities are said to be unacceptable as they seek to threaten their integrity and security, democratic values and principles, and the essential functioning of democracies.
According to the EU, the attacks targeted “numerous members of parliament, government officials, politicians and members of the press and civil society in the EU by accessing computer systems and personal accounts and stealing data”.
“German politicians and officials were among those targeted by Russian malicious cyber-activities,” an EU official told CNN on Friday.
