Gunshots at a Tennessee grocery store killed one person and injured 12 others Thursday afternoon. The attacker was later found dead from a gunshot wound to the store east of Memphis, authorities said.
Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said the incident took place at the Kroger store, in an area about 50 miles east of Memphis. He said a total of 13 people were shot and 12 of them were taken to hospitals, some with very serious injuries.
He said a team of special police forces (SWAT) and other officers entered the store corridor to find people seeking protection or hiding, evacuating them. He said the attacker was found dead from a gunshot wound.
“We found people hiding in refrigerators and closed offices. “They were applying the lessons they had learned during the trainings on these situations: run, hide and fight.” said Mr. Lane.
Authorities have not yet revealed the identities of the attacker and the victims.
Lane said it was a sad day for his department as he spoke at a news conference after the shooting near the scene.
“I have worked here for 34 years and I have never seen anything like it.” he told reporters.
He added that investigations into the incident have already begun.
