The European Union has announced that it will order the introduction of universal chargers for mobile phones.
“European consumers have long been frustrated that they have incompatible loaders in their drawers. “We have given the industry more than enough time to come up with its own solutions, but now is the time to introduce legislative measures for shared chargers,” said Margarete Westanger, EU chief technology officer. She added that this is an important victory for users and the environment, in line with green and digital aspirations.
According to the European Commission, about 2.8 billion euros a year are spent on the purchase of additional chargers, which are not delivered along with the equipment. European officials have made efforts in the past to force the industry to standardize chargers.
But Apple is not happy with the idea of unique chargers
Apple has already reacted to the new changes, saying it is concerned that strict regulations requiring only one type of charger will discourage innovation, which will ultimately hurt consumers.
