The number of homicides in the United States increased by nearly 30 percent in 2020, compared to the previous year. This is the largest increase at the national level since the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began collecting data in 1960.
According to the FBI, the number of homicides has reached 21,570, or an increase of 4,901 compared to 2019. Data have shown that most homicides were committed with weapons, respectively 76 percent in 2020, as opposed to 73 percent in 2019.
Experts are not clear what lies behind the rapid growth, although economic and social hardships during the coronavirus pandemic and rising arms sales may be behind it. Arms control groups have said the figures are evidence that the American nation needs stricter gun controls.
Violence-related crimes have increased by 5.6 percent in 2020, while property-related crimes have continued their downward trend.
