Some people possess a version of a gene that could potentially inhibit the virus that causes Covid-19. This is the result of a study. The findings provide an explanation for why some people have better natural defenses against serious Sars-CoV-2 infection, scientists say.
Scientists say antiviral responses are better in people who have a more “protected” version of the OAS1 gene, while others have a version that fails to detect the virus.
But if the new variants learn to avoid the protection offered by the genius, they could become “substantially more pathogenic and transmissible to unvaccinated populations,” experts say.
The study was published in the journal Science and is the result of work led by the MRC-University of Glasgow Virus Research Center.
