Florida filed lawsuits against President Joe Biden’s administration on Tuesday, claiming his immigration policy is illegal. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an order banning state agencies from aiding undocumented immigrants arriving in his state.
Governor DeSantis orders the Florida Law Enforcement Department to “stop any aircraft, buses or other vehicles within the state of Florida that are believed to be transporting illegal aliens from the southwest border.”
He also ordered agencies to gather information on the identities of any immigrants arriving in Florida illegally from the U.S.-Mexico border and told state agencies not to spend money to help these immigrants unless required by law.
Democrat lawmaker Anna Eskamani criticized Mr. DeSantis, saying he was using the immigration issue to gain political points with his conservative base, rather than focusing on other issues facing the state.
“He is completely reckless and just wants to distract ordinary people from real life issues,” she said. “We have an affordable housing crisis. We have concerns about climate change. We have people who can not find a well-paying job. “There are so many issues around us, and that is what he chooses to address.”
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody’s lawsuit alleges that federal immigration policy will cost the state millions of dollars and cause damage to Florida.
“While some immigrants have legitimate asylum applications, many have no reason. “Some are gang members and drug traffickers taking advantage of the border crisis, as evidenced by the staggering amount of fentanyl seized at the border this year,” the lawsuit said.
Attorney General Moody’s and Governor DeSantis held a press conference in southwest Florida, in which they strongly condemned President Biden for immigration policies and praised those pursued by former President Donald Trump.
“President Biden is helping and supporting criminal cartels,” Moody said.
Asked about the lawsuit and the order by Governor DeSantis, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said she had not seen the lawsuit.
“Any Republican or any member who wants to have a constructive conversation to find a solution to the dilemma that we all agree is not a long-term sustainable operational or moral approach to immigration, we are ready to talk,” Ms. Psaki said.
DeSantis, considered a possible presidential candidate in 2024, has been attacking President Biden for months for immigration. He sent Florida law enforcement officers to Texas to help prevent illegal border crossings, and along with Attorney General Moody later visited the border and held a press conference to discuss the issue.
