NASA will withdraw from command of its missions from March to mid-October, as Earth and Mars are on opposite sides of the Sun, the US space agency said.
NASA stated that “as engineers stop sending commands, missions will continue to collect data on Mars during the period known as the ‘solar connection of Mars’, which occurs every two years.”
During solar connection, gas emitted from the sun can interfere with radio signals if engineers try to communicate with spacecraft on Mars.
“This could corrupt controls and lead to unexpected behavior on the part of deep space explorers,” according to NASA.
“Even if our missions to Mars are not so active in the coming weeks, they will still let us know about their health,” said Roy Gladden, NASA manager.
