PLEINS, GEORGIA – Jimmy Carter, the oldest former US president, celebrated his 97th birthday without much fuss at his home in southwest Georgia on Friday, an adviser to him said.
Slowing down in recent years and keeping a low profile during the coronavirus pandemic, Mr. Carter did not plan any public appearances, said press secretary Deanna Congelio at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
Employees at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Center in Pleins recorded greetings for the former president, and members of the public can sign a birthday card online at www.cartercenter.org.
Dozens of Americans sent birthday greetings earlier, and many did not even mention Carter’s democratic presidency from 1977-81. Instead, they said they were inspired by Mr. Carter’s life after the presidency, which included volunteer work, authorship of numerous books, and defense of justice.
“We want you for your honesty, your consistency and your being so articulate,” reads a message. Many shared photos of them with Mr. Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, who celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in July.
The former president was diagnosed with melanoma that had spread to the liver and brain in 2015, but he underwent treatment and announced he no longer had cancer four months later. He has suffered a series of crashes, including the one he left with his broken pelvis in October 2019.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited the Carters family at their home in April. “We sat down and talked about the old days,” Biden said of his predecessor.
