The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, has said that the former president of this state, Mikheil Saakashvili, was arrested in Georgia, a few hours after he returned from exile, on the eve of the local elections.
Saakashvili was arrested and taken into custody, Garibashvili told a news conference on October 1. He did not provide further details.
Saakashvili’s whereabouts have been unknown for several hours after he posted a video on the social network Facebook on Friday morning, saying he is in the city of Batumi, after eight years away from the South Caucasus state.
Authorities later said there was no evidence that Saakashvili had crossed the border and that the ruling Georgian Dream party had accused him of falsely returning to Georgia.
Saakashvili, who has lived in Ukraine so far, said earlier this week that he planned to travel to Tbilisi to help “preserve the state” on election day.
