It may sound like something out of a new James Bond movie, but Earth 300 is a ‘nuclear-powered’ yacht with bold ambitions.
According to EuroNews, although not yet built, this carbon-free yacht is designed as a traveling laboratory for scientists to explore the oceans and tackle today’s biggest environmental problems. With space for 22 laboratories, 160 scientists and 22 students, the yacht will be supplied by a “Melted Salt Reactor” – a new type of ‘nuclear energy’ that is 100 percent emission-free.
There is also room for tourists, but at a price.
Designed by super-yacht expert Ivan Salas Jefferson, the Earth 300 will also have room for 40 VIP guests who will pay $ 3 million for the pleasure of staying aboard. Scientists and students will either travel for free or at a reduced fare.
“We want to build a global icon for science, created like a scientific sculpture in the seas, to attract people’s attention and inspire their imagination,” said Aaron Olivera, head of Earth 300. The company hopes the super yacht will be ready for navigation in 2025.
The ‘birth’ of the super yacht
Demand for super-yachts has grown in the last 10 years, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of global ‘super rich’. “Earth 300” will be 300 meters in length and 60 meters in height. This is 31 meters longer than the Titanic.
With a futuristic architectural design, the yacht will include state-of-the-art weather visualization labs, 3D printing labs and biosafety labs set up to handle viruses like COVID-19, according to Oliveria, reports EuroNews.
“It will carry 4 different communities – scientists, experts, students and private citizens.” “It is this mix of citizens and scientists that the team hopes to produce a radical new thinking in the fight against climate change.
Is the technology ready?
While the design of the Earth 300 is a futuristic model, most of the required technology has not yet hit the market. Initially, the yacht will be powered by green fuel, as the “Melted Salt Reactor” is still under development. The reactor is being developed by Terrapower, a company backed by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates.
Once ready, the reactor will be set up, allowing the super-yacht to be 100 percent emission-free.
