Russian President Vladimir Putin, referring today to the situation in the gas energy market in Europe, said that Europe was responsible for the wrong policy of the EC that rejected long-term contracts for the supply of natural gas with Russia and returned to domestic markets.
“The European Commission made a mistake when it wanted to give up long-term contracts and turn to gas trading on the stock exchange. The practice of our European partners has once again confirmed that they made mistakes. We were still talking to the previous composition of the European Commission and its whole policy was to get rid of the so-called long-term contracts. They were facing the transition to the gas stock trade and proved that today it is absolutely clear that this policy is wrong. “As a result, the price of natural gas has broken all historical records: today it is approaching $ 2,000 per thousand cubic meters, which is more than ten times higher than the average price last year,” said the Russian president.
Europe, which supplies about a third of its gas needs with supplies from Moscow, has said for years that it wants to diversify its supply sources to no avail.
The Russian president also said that Russia, based on this year’s results, could again supply Europe with hydrocarbons, including gas, in record quantities. At the same time, he noted that Russia was and is a reliable supplier of natural gas to Asia and Europe, as it fully fulfills all its obligations set out in such contracts.
