Italy has been hit by storms this week, some of them violent. Today, a torrential downpour and hailstorm swept through Catania, on the island of Sicily.
City officials posted about the tornado on Facebook. There have been reports of injuries, significant damage to homes and businesses, uprooted trees and blocked roads.
Four incoming planes had to be diverted to other airports. Residents of Mount Etna were told to stay home. In the Liguria region, massive rainfall on Monday and Tuesday caused rivers to overflow their banks.
“A small bridge collapsed and 10 families had to be evacuated by rescue workers,” Italian media reported. In Savona, Monday’s rainfall was the heaviest in the coastal province’s history, causing landslides and flooding and disrupting road and rail services.
