In India, where most electricity production depends on coal, it has been reported that there may be an energy crisis due to increased demand for electricity.
According to local media, Indian Energy Minister Raj Kumar Singh stressed that coal-fired power plants with a capacity of 40-50 gigawatts currently have fuel reserves for “less than three days”.
Singh warned it could take up to six months for power plants to have enough fuel and during this time an energy crisis could occur.
Stating that demand is expected to gradually decline by mid-October, Singh said they will work with state-owned firm Coal India Ltd and India’s largest power producer, NTPC Ltd., to increase mineral production and meet requests.
In the country, 70 percent of electricity production is provided by coal-fired power plants.AA
