Pope Francis has reacted harshly to sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in France. He has considered it a moment of shame.
“This is a considerable number. I expressed my grief and pain to the victims for the trauma they have suffered. This is a shame for me, a shame for all of us, my shame, “said Pope Francis at the Vatican.
The pope called on bishops and church leaders in France to do everything possible to ensure that such incidents do not happen again and “so that the Church becomes again a safe house for all.”
A commission of inquiry reported yesterday that some 216,000 children and young people had been victims of sexual violence in the French Catholic Church since the 1950s. Together with Church-run institutions, there may have been 330,000 victims. The Conference of French Bishops reaffirmed today that there should be financial compensation for the victims.
