The federal government in Belgium will consider a proposal to reduce working days from 5 to 4 days a week.
The proposal presented by politicians and parliamentarians of liberal orientation, envisages that the weekly number of hours should not change, but only reduce the number of working days.
The proposal calls for weekly working hours, which are 38 or 40 hours depending on the sector, to be distributed over 4 days. The Liberals’ proposal is supported by many political parties.
Meyrem Almaci, chairwoman of the Green Party in the Flemish region of Belgium, expressed support for the proposal.
“In principle, we believe that this proposal is good for the freedom of employees, but of course, the decision should be left to employees,” said Almaci.
The Green Party also demanded that the views of all social partners, including unions and employers, be consulted before a decision is made.
The socialist unions opposed the proposal. The union representatives argue that not only working days but also working hours of employees should be shortened.
The federal government is expected to consider next week which sectors the proposal may apply to.AA
