Brazil has become only the second country in the world to record more than 600,000 deaths from the coronavirus, as the treatment of the pandemic by far-right President Jair Bolsonaro continues to face criticism and sharp control.
Bolsonaro, a vaccination skeptic has caused outrage among health experts and many Brazilians for minimizing the severity of the virus, rejecting blockages and other public health measures, and failing to provide COVID-19 vaccines quickly.
He has faced mass protests in recent months, with demonstrators criticizing his COVID-19 government policies and calling for his impeachment, and a Brazilian Senate committee in April launched an investigation into his pandemic policies.
But despite the black record there were signs that infections in Brazil were finally falling as the country boosted vaccinations after a slow start.
More than 70 percent of Brazilians have received the first dose, compared with 65 percent in the United States, which exceeded 600,000 deaths in June.
