Prosecutors suspect that Chancellor Kurz and his confidants bought the road to the Chancellery through rigged opinion polls and paid media reports.
The continuation of the coalition with the Austrian People’s Party (PVP) is possible only without Kurz, in the face of serious allegations of corruption, said in Vienna the chairwoman of the parliamentary group of the Greens Maurer. In addition, the Greens want to consult on the situation in talks with other parties, in order to find a way out of the government crisis and provide “stability and clarification”. This was announced by the party leader and Vice Chancellor Kogler.
To have a majority, the Greens would need not only the votes of the Social Democratic Party SPÖ and the liberals of NEOS, but also those of the right-wing FPÖ. The four parties are not campaigning for new elections, against the popular Kurz. Next Tuesday, the opposition intends to file a no-confidence motion against Kurz in a separate session of parliament. His party, ÖVP, still supports Kurz.
SPS politician Hannes Swoboda described it as a tragic situation that Austria was again in a government crisis. Under Kurzin, a coalition with the FPÖ and one with the SPÖ has already broken down, now he is breaking it with the Greens, Swoboda told German radio station Deutschlandfunk. He described nepotism as a phenomenon of Austrian politics.
Suspicion of abuse, corruption and bribery
“People are talking about the Kurz system,” Swoboda said. He has created a network to support each other and elevate to position. Posts are increasingly given according to party political interests. Kurzi however had overdone it with his personal networks, Swoboda continued. This is especially dangerous because Parliament can no longer control it.
There were checks at the Austrian Chancellery and ÖVP headquarters on Wednesday. Prosecutors suspect that Sebastian Kurz and his confidants bought their way to the Chancellery through rigged opinion polls and paid media reports. The propaganda project is believed to have been illegally paid for with money from the Ministry of Finance. Kurz himself denies any guilt.
In the prosecutor’s control decision, the 104-page content of which was published in full by the news magazine “Profil”, Sebastian Kurz is mentioned as the “central person” in investigations into abuse, corruption and bribery: all actions are carried out “in a row seen in his interest ”.
Van der Bellen continues consultations
And further: “From the large number of evaluated electronic messages it can be seen that he is the one who makes the central decisions on all important issues and that these decisions are implemented by his closest circle of advisors.”
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen will speak today with FPÖ party leader Herbert Kickl and Neos Liberal leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger to conclude his round of consultations with the leaders of all parties represented in parliament.
Meinl-Reisinger drew a parallel in a special broadcast on ORF last night with the “Ibiza video”, which captured the former FPÖ politician Heinz-Christian Strache in 2019: “What Heinz-Christian Strache dreamed of in a evening…, this Sebastian Kurz has apparently implemented very calmly, very cold. “And he did this years before the ‘Ibiza video’ was made public.” In this situation, you can not continue working as if nothing happened./DW/
