Bulgarian authorities announce the arrest of famous Russian scientist Sergei Zoneko. The well-known expert was arrested together with his wife and son.
According to the media, Zonenko lived for 8 years in Bulgaria and was in charge of the Ammunition Classification Department at the Arsenal factory.
This factory produces artillery systems, firearms and ammunition. Earlier, the Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office had warned that an organized sabotage by the Russian Military Intelligence Service (GRU) could take place at the plant.
Zonenko is a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. In 1987 he defended his thesis regarding the safety of nuclear reactors. He is the author of a number of publications, including, ostensibly, scientific discoveries related to the Theory of Explosions. After 2010, he began to apply his theory in the production of cumulative ammunition.
The detention of a Russian man was announced by the Bulgarian Interior Ministry last week, but his name was not known.
Factory representatives had previously reported missing product samples and documentation for them. While Zonenko, along with his wife and son, were trying to leave Bulgaria, missing documents and belongings were found in their car.
