At least four people have been killed and five others injured in a car bomb blast in the southern Yemeni city of Aden.
Officials said the four dead were soldiers, while the three people injured were civilians, including a child. According to the state news agency, the attack was “a terrorist assassination attempt” on Governor Ahmed Lamlas, who is secretary general of the Southern Transitional Council (STC). This council is in competition with the central government, supported by Saudi Arabia, for control of Aden and the southern part of the country.
The government and the STC are allies in the Saudi-led coalition to fight the Iranian-backed Huthi rebels, although relations between them are often strained. The divisions in southern Yemen have complicated United Nations efforts to end the war in Yemen, which has left tens of thousands dead.
