Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen has stated that they will not bow to pressure from China and will defend their democratic way of life.
According to the BBC, the statements come on Taiwan’s National Day after Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to “fulfill the reunification”.
China has denounced President Tsai’s speech, saying it “provoked confrontation”.
Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, while China sees it as a breakaway province.
Beijing has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve unification.
