The first typhoon research institute was established in Japan.
The Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center, established at Yokohama National University in Kanagawa, southeast of Tokyo, will bring together experts and academics from government and private institutions.
The center, which is the first in Japan, will aim to assess the damage that typhoons can cause and determine the framework of measures that can be taken.
The center will also lead research on the use of typhoons as a renewable energy source, in line with the Japanese government’s goal of zero carbon by 2050.
The head of this institute, Hironori Fudeyasu, said that “I feel defeated by the great damage caused by the typhoons”.
“We intend to collaborate with many researchers to conduct rigorous studies and present the results to the community. “I see the light ahead,” he added.
The organization includes academics from many universities, including the Meteorological Research Institute and the government-backed RIKEN Research Center, and experts from Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Deloitte Tohmatsu.
