Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny said Monday that a prison commission had designated him an extremist and terrorist.
Navalny said on Instagram that he had been summoned before a commission that voted unanimously in favor of the status change. It also marks a further escalation of official pressure against President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent domestic critic, who is currently serving two and a half years in prison for parole violations, he says, that they were shaken to thwart his political ambitions.
Navalny made the announcement, saying he welcomed the fact that he was no longer designated as ‘prone to escape’ and thus would be subject to less frequent and stringent night checks by guards.
“Only now there is a sign on my bed that I am a terrorist,” Navalny said in the post, which was published with the help of his lawyers.
Navalny, 45, was jailed when he returned to Russia earlier this year from Germany, where he underwent months of treatment to recover from poisoning with a rare nerve agent in Siberia in August 2020.
