A civic initiative to ban the use of private cars in central Berlin could create the world’s largest car-free urban area.
The group called “Berlin Autofrei” (Berlin without cars) has taken the first step to hold a referendum by collecting more than 50 thousand signatures.
It is about banning the use of cars in an area of 88 square km. According to federal government rules, Berlin must have 50% of electric vehicles in use from next year.
Germany currently uses only 1.3% of electric vehicles and it should be almost impossible to achieve this goal.
Activists, however, again oppose the argument that electric vehicles pollute tires and take up too much space.
