The Belarusian government has expelled the French ambassador from their country.
An embassy spokesman confirmed to AFP that Ambassador Nicolas de Lacoste left the country on Sunday. He was given a deadline to leave on Monday.
De Lacoste, who is 57, was sent to Minsk late last year.
Local media have suggested that he failed to present his credentials to President Alexander Lukashenko.
In a statement to AFP, a spokesman for the French embassy said: “The Belarusian Foreign Ministry has requested that the ambassador leave before October 18.
“He said goodbye to the embassy staff and recorded a video message for the Belarusian people, which will appear tomorrow morning on the embassy website,” the spokesman added.
It is worth noting that France, like other European Union countries, does not recognize Lukashenko as president, after last year’s election and allegations of many frauds in them.
