Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the COP26 climate summit expected to take place in Glasgow.
A Kremlin spokesman announced the decision, but gave no reason why the Russian president would not be present, although the issue has been in Russia’s focus.
COP26 takes place in Scotland’s largest city, from 31 October to 12 November.
Russia’s decision is seen as a blow to forcing leaders to negotiate a new deal to stem rising global temperatures.
“Unfortunately Putin will not fly to Glasgow,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
COP26 is the largest conference on climate change since the historic Paris talks in 2015. About 200 countries are being asked to present their plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are causing global warming, by 2030.
Reducing global warming is essential to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
Meanwhile, President Putin himself has not commented on the announcement of his participation, foreign media write.
