UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid has held an extraordinary conference this afternoon on the serious situation of Covid-19. He said winter poses the biggest threat as cases are increasing day by day. He adds that case numbers can go up to 100,000 a day.
He has further announced new deals with antiviral drugs.
“We have to be proud that the United Kingdom is in charge. Dexamethasone is estimated to have saved one million lives worldwide. We are also seeing promising developments for antivirals. They work by targeting the virus at an early stage and disrupting the way they develop and multiply. I am pleased to announce that we have signed two historic agreements to supply hundreds of thousands of doses of two new antivirals. The race between “the virus and vaccines is narrowing,” said Sajid Javid, adding that the government would redouble its efforts to get people to take another dose.
“Booster injections are vital to keeping people safe for months to come,” Javid added.
He again called on people to adhere to a testing regimen and isolate themselves if they have tested positive.
Javid says the government is concerned about the increase in cases and the number of deaths. But the vaccines are clearly working and are estimated to have saved 130,000 lives.
