Today is the full moon, also known as the “Hunter’s Full Moon”. Thousands of years ago, humans used the moon to keep track of the seasons and to set schedules for hunting, planting, and harvesting. Therefore, the full moon of each month is given its own name.
Why is the October Moon called the Hunter Moon?
There are many theories about where the nickname comes from, but it is most commonly believed that the full October moon served as a signal for hunters to start hunting before the next winter season. According to these theories, farmers finish all the field work after the September Harvest Moon and then it is the turn of the hunters, as the animals have already started fattening before winter and they are going out in pursuit of the remaining waste. It is believed that both the Harvest Moon and the Hunter Moon were named by farmers and hunters to distinguish the two periods.
When is the Hunter Moon?
The full moon of October is known as the Hunter Moon, but also as Travel Moon and Dying Grass Moon. It is also called Sanguine or Blood Moon because of the blood from the hunt or the changing color of the autumn leaves. This year the Hunter Moon will fall on Wednesday, October 20th. In the US it is expected to be most visible at 10:57 ET, while in the UK it will reach maximum brightness at 15:56 BST.
When is the next full moon and what is it called?
There are also two full moons this year. The penultimate period of the year will take place on November 19 and is called Beaver Moon. The last for 2021, called the Cold Moon, will be visible on December 18th.
