Unlike the daily ritual, this Sunday, the streets of Madrid were filled with sheep instead of cars. This is done to recall once again an old rite, which has to do with the ancient seasonal path that shepherds have followed over the centuries.
According to foreign media, locals lined the sidewalks to welcome the spectacle, which was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The annual event, which began in 1994, allows shepherds to exercise the right to use traditional roads to herd cattle from northern Spain to the more southern pastures.
The road would have led them through a quiet village a few centuries ago, but today you see them traversing the busy city.
“That’s wonderful. I come every year and this is the first year I bring children so it is amazing “, said Graciela Gonzalez, 39 years old.
The sheep walked “accompanied” by the sound of their noisy neck bells while the shepherds dressed in traditional dress accompanied the herds of cattle with folk music and dancing.
