Rescue crews resumed their search Monday for a couple who turn out to be missing from the extreme weather that hit southern Italy over the weekend causing significant material damage as well.
The body of a 67-year-old man found by floods near the Sicilian city of Scordia by rescue teams while his 54-year-old wife is missing.
The couple had reportedly attempted to leave the area with their car before being swept away by the rising waters.
Sicily, Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia remain on alert in the face of extreme weather, which disrupted embankments in the provinces of Trapani and Catania.
Catania Mayor Salvo Pogliese has closed the city’s schools, parks and cemetery.
Scientists say climate change caused by human activity is making extreme weather events more frequent and even more intense.
