Donald Tusk, the former Prime Minister and former President of the European Council, was elected leader of the Civic Platform (PO), Poland’s main opposition party.
“Tusk, the only candidate for the post, was supported by 97.4 percent of PO members,” Dorota Niedziela, the PO’s national election commissioner, told a news conference.
“I confirm that the candidate Donald Tusk received the required number of votes and was elected chairman of the ‘Civic Platform'”, said Niedziela.
One of Poland’s most successful politicians and co-founder of the PO, Tusk (64) served as prime minister from 2007-14.
After leaving Polish politics he became president of the European Council, before becoming the leader of the European People’s Party, the largest bloc in the European Parliament.
Tusk became acting PO on July 3 following the resignation of Borys Budka. He said at the time that he had decided to return to the domestic political scene because YES is a team of absolutely special people.
