Two people were killed and at least nine others injured in a lab blast at a university in China eastern, state media said Monday.
The blast occurred Sunday afternoon at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Nanjing is a major center of higher education that attracts a large number of foreign students. Officials were investigating the cause of the explosion at the university’s School of Materials Science and Technology, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
The identity of the victims is not disclosed. The school website says more than 1,000 foreign students have attended in-school courses in engineering, business and Chinese language. But it was not clear how many remained as China began imposing pandemic travel restrictions.
China has sought to establish itself as a major player in global aviation and space flight, although its efforts to produce commercial aircraft have not yet had a significant impact.
