Search-and-rescue teams in Nigeria on Wednesday are trying to work as quickly as possible to find survivors, two days after a high-rise building under construction collapsed and trapped dozens of people in Lagos. An emergency official said the death toll had risen to 22.
Anxious relatives and large numbers of people gathered near the site of the collapsed building in hopes of getting some news of the fate of people still trapped under the rubble, writes Reuters.
The coordinator of the National Agency for Emergency Management for Lagos, Ibrahim Farinloye, told Reuters that the death toll had gone up to
22, after some bodies were retrieved overnight. Nine people have been rescued alive.
Demolition of buildings occurs quite often in the most populous state in Africa, where building rules are poorly enforced and materials often do not meet the required standards.
The chief state architect was suspended indefinitely on Tuesday and the government launched an independent investigation into the causes of the building collapse that was planned for luxury housing. The results of the investigation will be presented to the public.
