The story was written by astronauts on the International Space Station, as they not only cultivated the first chili peppers, but also consumed them.
NASA astronaut Megan MacArthur, one of seven crew members currently living and working on the International Space Station (ISS), created what she called “the best space tacos” using some of the peppers that were collected. in space, some “fajita” beef and canned tomatoes.
The astronauts had to consume red and green peppers and record their experience as the “tacos” were part of a wider experiment.
The 48 Hatch peppers are part of a new NASA effort to test more food for long-term missions to the Moon and Mars.
NASA astronauts planted Chile Hatch seeds in an Advanced Plant Habitat, a development booth equipped with more than 180 sensors and LED lights controlled by a crew at the Kennedy Space Center. There is also a similar room known as the Vegetable Production System, where vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage and flowers are grown for about six years.
