The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has received the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel in what can be called the farewell meeting. He thanked the “Iron Lady” for keeping Europe united during times of crisis.
Macroni thanked Merkel for her patience with him and for the lessons she has given him.
“Ever since you became chancellor, France has learned to know and love you,” Macroni told Merkel, bestowing the highest award, the Legion of Honor.
Pictures from the meeting have been published on the Internet, where the two leaders are seen very close to each other, embracing and holding hands together.

Macroni said Merkel first worked with former French President Jacques Chirac, then with another former president, Nicolas Sarkozy, to cope with the financial crisis and keep the eurozone united, while with former President Francois Hollande worked to counter terrorism and the immigrant crisis, while collaborating with him (Macron) to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
Merkel, now 67, has led Germany for about 16 years. She will step down when a new governing coalition is formed following the September 26th elections, in which she did not seek a new term.
