Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday announced a food subsidy package worth more than US $ 700 million for the next six months under the Ehsaas (Compassion) program amid the latest price hikes in the country.
Addressing the nation through national television, Khan said the recent price increase was followed by rising commodity prices in the international market, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to official statistics published by the Office of the Prime Minister, about 20 million households identified through the recently completed Ehsaa survey would benefit directly from this program.
Under the package, beneficiaries would receive a subsidy for the purchase of flour, green beans and cooking oil.
The program is designed as an accurate target system for the distribution of subsidies, focusing on beneficiaries who deserve to provide financial assistance for the purchase of essential goods at a discount through digitally processed transactions, the official statement said.
