Turkey will expel 9 honorary consuls of nine countries. The news was announced by the Turkish Foreign Ministry. According to reports, this act comes because the consuls have criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to Ahval, the consuls that the Turkish Foreign Ministry canceled diplomatic identities are the honorary consuls of Sweden in Antalya, Britain in Mugla, Belgium and Austria in Smyrna, Romania in Iskenderun, Ethiopia in Konya, the Dominican Republic, Belize in Istanbul and Lithuania in Nevsehir.
Honorary consuls are usually free of charge and, in addition to strengthening trade and cultural ties, also perform some basic consular duties. They do not enjoy full “diplomatic immunity”, but only a partial immunity strictly for their duties.
There are currently about 120 honorary consuls in modern Turkey, some of whom are very successful Turkish businessmen.
