The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, accused the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, of, as he said, orchestrating an unprecedented wave of migrants trying to enter Poland illegally from Belarus.
Poland closed a border crossing with Belarus on Tuesday after migrants on the Belarusian side tried to break through a fence to enter its territory.
The migrant crisis in this area has been going on for months now.
The European Union (EU) has accused Belarus’ authoritarian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenko of inciting the influx in retaliation for EU sanctions against his regime.
“This attack that Lukashenko is carrying out has its brains in Moscow; “The organizer is President Putin,” Morawiecki told an emergency session of the Polish parliament.
The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, said at a press conference in Warsaw that “the Belarusian regime is attacking the Polish border and the EU in an unprecedented way.”
“Currently we have a camp of immigrants, who are blocked by the Belarusian side. There are about 1,000 people, mostly young people. “These are aggressive actions that we must repel, fulfilling our obligations as a member state of the European Union,” said Duda.
Thousands of people – mostly from the Middle East and Asia – have been trying to cross the Polish border illegally in recent months.
On Tuesday, Lithuania became the second EU country, after Poland – to declare a state of emergency on its border with Belarus over the migrant crisis.
