The Ukrainian government has said it will deploy additional 8,500 soldiers and police to guard its border with Belarus, in a bid to prevent border crossings.
The new force includes 3,000 border guards, 3,500 National Guard soldiers and 2,000 police officers, Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskiy said on Thursday.
“Aviation from the interior ministry will also be on duty, especially 15 helicopters, which will provide mobility and, if necessary, transfer our forces to the border,” he said.
Although not a member of the EU, Ukraine is wary of becoming another front in the unfolding migrant crisis.
