The head of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, told the Associated Press that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is “to support life on earth.” He said the UN climate summit being held in Glasgow, Scotland, would probably not result in governments promising to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Ahead of the November 12 summit, pressure has mounted on governments to reach a meaningful climate deal. But the UN chief also said that until the last moment “there is hope”. Scientists say limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5C will help humanity avoid the worst climate impacts.
In Paris in 2015, world leaders pledged to prevent global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius through cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. The UN Secretary-General added that promises to reduce emissions are meaningless as countries continue to invest in fossil fuels.
