Dontae Sharpe, from North Carolina, who was wrongly convicted of murder, is released after 26 years in prison. The BBC writes that the pardon was given to him by the governor. Sharpe had tried over the years to fight for his innocence while being arrested in 1994.
“My family name has been cleared. “It’s a burden on my shoulders and on my family,” he told reporters.
Governor Roy Cooper said in a statement apologizing that he had carefully considered the case and that those wrongly convicted as Sharpe “deserve this injustice to be fully and publicly acknowledged.”
